PAST EVENTS
Since 1999, over 200 women have participated in Women In Action activities in San Francisco and San Jose. Though hikes, rock climbing, ropes courses, and kayaking, we taught teamwork and communications skills and challenged women to push their limits on our courses.

Through team support and individual motivation, women became successful in their outdoor endeavors. They have also been very clear on the meaning of these lessons as they affect their transition to work. Job retention rates for women who have participated in WIA activities range from 84% at 6 months to 70% at one year.

Our Fun in the Sun picnic at Stern Grove raised over $600 for our programs. 30 fun-lovers joined us at Stern Grove, on Sunday, July 18, 2004, for an afternoon of music and food to benefit Women in Action. For a $20 donation, we held lawn seating near the stage (people show up at 8 AM to get this seating!) and provided simple picnic fare for lunch, including wine and soft drinks. Then we all enjoyed the sounds of Africa Near and Far with Youssou N'Dour and the local West African Highlife Band - no worries about finding seating or hauling food.

Our Wine Tasting event on September 25, 2002, was a great success, raising over $2000 for Women In Action. Supervisor Gavin Newsom attended and commended us on the work we are doing to move women from welfare to self-sufficiency. Over 30 people were in attendance to hear Gavin speak and to ask questions about his plans and initiatives for the city. Special thanks to Lisa Shea and Meridian Vineyards for supplying great wines for us to taste and to Tricia Roth, a WIA board member, who catered the delightful food for the event!

2001 FUNraiser! On September 22, 2001, 35 fun-loving pedalers toured the Alexander Wine Valley while raising $1800 for WIA. The weather was perfect and the vineyards spectacular. During our bbq dinner, several folks won great prizes, including dinner for two at Thanya and Salee in San Francisco, workout videos, and (drum roll please) a fabulous gift basket worth $250 from NapaStyle. Congrats to everyone for completing the ride! Special thanks to Katy Mooney, Paul Connolly, Jessica Chan, NapaStyle and Thanya & Salee Restaurant.

October 26, 2000: Our Island Getaway FUNraiser was a great success! Caribbean Rhythms provided tropical steel band sounds, and lots of folks walked away with great deals in the silent auction! Thank you to Allen Scott of Mystery Machine Productions and Broadway Studios for making this event run so smoothly! Additional thanks to Pacific Crest Outward Bound School, Sea Trek, Mission Cliffs and others for donating exciting silent auction items!
