OCTOBER 2001 NEWSLETTER
Highlights from the last eight months
Since February, over 30 women from three different job-training programs challenged themselves through hikes, ropes courses and a trip to a climbing gym. Some comments:
"I know that for me and the other women who went on this retreat, we learned more about each other, trust and teamwork. It was a beautiful experience!"
"After the ropes course, I felt like I left all my old baggage behind. This is something that I had to do all on my own…and I did it!!"
"This morning, I didn't really want to be here. But I had so much fun, and I really learned a lot. I'm so glad I came."
Alumnae Day: In March, 29 moms and kids made their way to Rodeo Beach in Marin for a day in the sun. Ginny Anderson, a volunteer with the Greenbelt Alliance, led moms and older kids on a nature walk through the headlands while Candra and I played on the beach with the little ones! Several families had such a great time that they made plans to take the bus back there the next weekend. (FYI, the 76 Muni bus goes from downtown/Van Ness to Rodeo Beach on Sundays for only $1.00.)
2001 FUNraiser! On September 22, 35 fun-loving pedalers toured the Alexander Wine Valley while raising $1800 for WIA. The weather was perfect and the vineyards spectacular. During our bbq dinner, several folks won great prizes, including dinner for two at Thanya and Salee in San Francisco, workout videos, and (drum roll please) a fabulous gift basket worth $250 from NapaStyle. Congrats to everyone for completing the ride! Special thanks to Katy Mooney, Paul Connolly, Jessica Chan, NapaStyle and Thanya & Salee.
Website: We have been so fortunate to find Caitlin and Christine, our web mistresses. Between the two of them, the website has a clean coherent look to it, and is updated often. Thank you, ladies!
Press: In July, a writer for the San Jose Business Journal accompanied us on a teamwork day in San Jose and wrote a great article that appeared in their Women In Business issue: "Team spirit: A helping hand eases escape from welfare," by Abigail Sterling Vazquez.
